Designing Furniture / Precision Woodworking
A November Weekend with Darrell Peart

New work and new designs by Darrell Peart

Recently (July 2010) Darrell Peart was nominated one of the Top Eight Furniture Designers in the world!

Darrell's Greene and Greene Details classes fill fast and there is always a lot of discussion of design in the class. Design is also one of Darrell's favorite topics.

There is also a lot of interest in how Darrell uses CAD to accurately draw and then generate precision jigs with a CNC router system (though he subcontracts that work out).

As an experiment we're offering a weekend seminar in the middle of November to see what the interest is in these topics. We're going to impose a hard date for a minimum sign up (10 students for each class) so that Darrell has enough time to prepare the class. That cutoff date is October 5th.

One of the reasons that we're imposing that hard date is that Darrell will be working on a new book and he needs to know how to schedule his time in the next few months.

We think that these two classes will be a good challenge and great inspiration for both professional furniture makers and dedicated amateur woodworkers.

Designing Furniture - November 13, 2010

This one-day class introduces you to furniture design from the perspective of Darrell Peart, which is heavily influenced by, among others, Greene & Greene. The class will cover a basic discussion of the rules of balance and proportion.

Several pieces of classic furniture will be analyzed to understand how a good design works. It is Darrell’s belief however, that the rules of design, while helpful in the beginning, will eventually inhibit the creative process.

Strategies will be given to help students develop their own intuition and encourage their inspiration.

As a prerequisite, students are requested to purchase William H Varnum’s (1916) book “Arts & Crafts Design” and read chapters 1-5 prior to class.

Students are then asked to design a piece of furniture using Varnum’s principles and bring the drawings to class for discussion.

Precision Woodworking - November 14, 2010

Subtitle:  Using CAD and Precision Jigs

Recent years have seen many technological advances in the woodworking world, such as CAD, which have opened up an entirely new approach to woodworking.

This new technology permits precision jigs to be made which greatly simplify previously difficult operations.

A series of simple steps will be outlined that lead to the successful completion of a precision jig. To illustrate the process several real life examples will be presented. Measuring with precision will also be covered, which is crucial to effective use of precision jigs.

Please note that no instruction will be given for any specific CAD program. This class will focus on what is possible with a CAD program that is accurate to within .001” and can export to a format used by CNC (.dwg, .dxf. …etc). If you already have a CAD program or if you are curious as to some of CAD’s possibilities – then this class is for you!

Registration:

We're changing the registration process a little for this class:

There is a standard registration fee of  $40 and then a charge of $85 for each day of the seminar.

Maximum class size either day is 20.

Note: we need a minimum enrollment of 10 students by October 5th 2010 for the class to run.
