We're all looking at how to reduce the impact we have on the environment. In woodworking we can make decisions about how we work, how we source our wood and what we add to the wood to complete a piece of furniture or a cabinet.
Furniture makes tend to be a pretty picky lot - they are looking for that perfect board or boards with wonderful figure, great colour and no defects. There is a small percentage of furniture grade wood in a tree. There is a strong tendency to use wood that is transport from another hemisphere at a significant transportation cost - both financially and in terms of carbon emssions.
In this course we look at how to harvest lumber locally and dry it. We cover air drying and the building of a solar kiln. We will build a solar kiln during this course. The solar kiln and the drying lumber will add to the array of reuse, recycle and enviromentally friendly projects both at the school and Fort Worden State Park.
We'll look at the changes you have to make to work with locally harvested lumber and how you make cabinetry wholly out of solid wood - no use of plywood or other man made panels. We'll also look at how you can make the curved parts of furniture from curved parts of trees.
This course is a little experimental and things may change. We're also open to you suggesting topics that you'd like to see covered
