In this course you build your joinery and project planning skills by designing and making a well engineered solid small wood cabinet (about the size of a nightstand) The joinery will be a combination of traditional hand made joints and modern machine joinery. The cabinet includes solid wood draw and a frame and panel door.
In the first few days of the course we focus on the techniques for machine joinery, solid wood carcass and panel construction, draw making, door making, selecting and installing hardware. We look closely at the design to ensure that grain orientation and reactions to seasonal changes are handled correctiy in the design.
In between lectures, demonstrations and hands on joinery training you will design and prototype the cabinet.
Once your design is finalized you take your materials list to Edensaw (our local lumberyard) to buy the wood. In building a small cabinet like this attention to grain pattern and direction are important as you layout the parts. This can make a big difference in the finished piece.
After the final dimensioning of all the pieces you start the joinery. There are combination of dovetails and machine joints on some parts. We look closely at how to identify sub-assemblies of the cabinet and where prefinishing can speed things up.
Gluing techniques and clamping strategies are important to ensure that the cabinet is square and that all the components will align before final assembly. We will demonstate the techniques and work with each student to ensure that the glue up goes smoothly.
The draw you build will be a piston fit - it will glide in and out without using modern draw runners. The face of the draw will be mounted for an even reveal. You can also design and make your own draw and door handles.
We'll show you how to fit and tune the door to be perfectly centered with even reveals.
You probably won't get all the coats of finish on your piece but you'll go home knowing how to finish the piece and make the grain pop.
