Practical Historic Presevation
A ten day class with Kevin Palo

Our first historic preservation class in March 2009 was heavily biased towards the theory and discussion of the practice of the preservation and restoration of old buildings. There were several practical sessions during course and we got a lot of feedback that the students wanted more hands experience of preservation work. We've heard you!

This 10-day course includes about 1.5 days of class room time and the rest of the course will be hands-on. The course will focus on restoring the East Facade of the Motor Vehicle Pool building (aka the Quartermaster's Building) at Fort Worden. This building is about 200 yards away from the school.

Students will work in small teams on the building. The course will follow the general practice of Historic Preservation (following the Secretary of Interior's Standards for Historical Preservation).

During the first week each team will assess areas of the facade and produce a detailed list of the work to be done, materials and tools required to complete the restoration. The work plan will be executed during the second week of the course.

Practical skills you will learn:

  • Assessment and planning of basic preservation work
  • Structural stabilization
  • Window repair and restoration
  • Siding and trim replacement and repair
  • Preparation for painting
  • Using epoxy for the stabilization of damaged material

This is great training for contractors and carpenters who want to move into the general area of Historic Preservation.

The course will run from Tuesday  June 15th through Friday June 26th. Weekend work is optional.
