Introduction to the Tablesaw, Jointer, Planer & Bandsaw
with Jim Tolpin & Tim Lawson

3 Day course

Friday, June 27, 2008 to Sunday, June 29, 2008
or

Wednesday, September 10, 2008 to Friday, September 12, 2008

The tablesaw is often, mistakenly, viewed as the key machine in a woodworking shop but it is only one of a quartet of stationary machines that are really needed.

The jointer and planer are used to create the stock milled to thickness with square edges. The bandsaw is the most used stationary tool in many shops - it can rough cut lumber before milling, clean up tenons or cut long elegant curves.

Like all machines these work best, and are safer to use, when they are well maintained, have sharp blades and are tuned for accuracy. In this course we'll teach you how to maintain, change the blades and tune up each machine. This is not a lecture and demonstration session, working in pairs you'll get to go through the whole process on each machine.

We'll also teach you the correct use of each machine and take you through the full process of milling lumber. We'll also show you how to make some of the jigs and push sticks that make using these machines even safer.

We'll emphasize the use of featherboards, splitters, sleds and dust collection (where appropriate) on each machine.

While the table saw is not necessarily the king of shop we'll delve into Jim Tolpin's book "Table Saw Magic" and show you how to use a make the jigs to extend the usefulness and capability of the table saw.

Time permitting we'll touch on the other stationary machines - drill presses and various types of stationary sanders.
