Woodworking for Women
Courses with Martha Collins

Our Woodworking for women is run by Martha Collins. Martha runs a successful business making wonderful turned jewellry and tableware; in a prior life she ran a furniture shop.

Martha's classes provide a supportive well equipped environment for women to explore woodworking. We offer a "taster" -- a weekend long introduction to woodworking. The week classes allow you to learn the basic techniques and to work on a project.

Woodworking for Women (Week)

Martha's aims to give you a good basic knowledge of woodworking by focusing on techniques.

This class starts by teaching you joinery with hand tools. You learn to use chisels, handplanes and Japanese hand saws to create lap and mortice and tenon joints.

As the week progresses Martha adds working with hand power tools into the mix. You can explore techniques and approaches for projects that you want to work on at home.

The course content is open ended and you can discuss with Martha what you'd like to learn. The course includes a trip to Edensaw (our local lumberyard) to demystify the process of buying good wood.

The school's workbenches are fully equipped with hand tools and there is an extensive collection of teaching tools. You do not need to bring any tools along. However if you do have some tools feel free to bring them along. Check with Martha if you have questions. This course will introduce you to the bigger woodworking machines but there will be no training on their use.

Woodworking for Women (Weekend)

We're heard very clearly that people want to explore woodworking without making the commitment to a five day course. We're offering this weekend course as a taster / sampler.

Two days is a fairly short time so Martha will you give an overview of woodworking and introduction to hand tool usage and small power tools. Martha will also talk about the different types of wood and wood products (plywood etc).

Come prepared with lots of questions - think of this as a series of conversations and explorations.
