Edge Tools - Sharpening, Tuning and Using Chisels & Planes
with Tim Lawson & Jim Tolpin

2 Day course

Monday, July 21, 2008 to Tuesday, July 22, 2008

(Code:ET080721)

(This two day course combines our earlier sharpening class with the Tune and Use Handplanes course to give you a thorough grounding in edge tools.)

Getting a smooth surface on a squirrelly piece of wood with a plane or paring a joint to a perfect fit with a chisel becomes easy with a razor sharp blade. Working with truly sharp tools marks the transition of woodworker to the next level of proficiency. You can work with greater precision, greater safety and much less effort.

The basics of sharpening can be easily learned but consistent accurate sharpening takes training and practice. We'll give you the training and initial practice. We'll teach you how to sharpen using locally available materials and a commercially available jig.

Having shaved with your blades you need to learn how to use them correctly. We'll teach you how to pare and chop with a chisel.

We'll also teach you how to tune up a hand plane using your own planes. You should be able to leave the class with a big handful of fine shavings.

We'll also review the different types of handplane and how they are used in fine joinery. We'll set up a series of practice joints and shaped work pieces so that you can get to try out the different planes.

We'll cover spokeshaves, briefly, as they are special class of plane.

Finally we'll show you how to sharpen and maintain the burr on a card scraper. The card scraper is that wondrously simple tool that lets you clean up tear out and other dings in the middle of a board. Bye, bye sandpaper.

Please bring a couple of chisels and any planes you have laying around. The chisels should be 1/2" to 1" wide. You'll take home tuned planes and razor sharp chisels. The material charge covers the cost of a scraper and sharpening materials used during the class
