Introduction to Hand Tools for Women
with Jim Tolpin and Tim Lawson

5 Day course

Monday, July 14, 2008 to Friday, July 18, 2008

(Code:IT080714)

We're offering this class to women only. However if the sign up is low we'll open it to everyone.

We assume that you have little or no experience of woodworking and that you are keen to learn. During this project based course you will build an elegant, Shaker-style sitting bench featuring traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

This course offers you an introduction to building furniture from the initial design, through working drawings with basic hand and hand held power tools. The stock will be pre-dimensioned in width and thickness.

Skills you will learn:

  • Understanding a working drawing and creating a cutlist
  • Laying out components on the stock
  • Cross-cutting stock to length with a handsaw
  • Smoothing and truing components with handplanes
  • Creating a wedged, through-tenon joint
  • Cutting and smoothing curved edges with a bandsaw and spokeshave
  • Assembling a relatively complex piece of furniture with square, tight-fitting joints
  • Applying a traditional oil and wax finish
