with Jim Tolpin & John Marckworth

(Code:SU080812)

Setting up a home shop can be a daunting task.

Using our class room and shop we'll will guide you through tool selection, shop layout for ease of use and safety. We'll take you through the sorts of machines and tools you'll need for different scale of operation: the occasional shop; the dedicated amateur shop and the beginning professional shop.

We'll look at construction and size options for the different shops; wood floors vs. concrete floors, types of heating and recommendations for power circuits.

We'll review tool storage, lumber storage, creating workstations, workflow in the shop, and more. We'll emphasize safety with a review of the various sorts of dust collection and creating safe working areas around machines.

We'll look at workbenches, vices (vises), clamping and lighting. We'll also look at the ergonomics of shop layout with a discussion of bench, storage and task height.

We encourage you to bring a design for your new or remodelled shop, pictures of your existing shop and prepare your questions about specific tools or problems you need to solve. We want this to be a full discussion!
