Through Texture to Character
with Dan Packard

Saturday, September 13, 2008 to Sunday, September 14, 2008

2 Day course

(Code:BC080913)

You can add character to a simple piece of furniture either by adding thematic elements (a wave form that spans components of the piece), or adding a texture or repeated abstract pattern to the surface of the piece. The texture increases the interplay of shadow and light on the surface of the piece. These changes can dramatically change the way a piece is percieved.

You will learn to create patterns both through drawing and through practice. Pattern is influenced by the shape of the tool and the way the tool is guided. The tool will make it's own patterns. Coversely if you design a pattern you need to figure out which tools and steps to use to create the pattern.

We'll show you how to quickly draw and repeat a texture so that you can imagine it on your piece. The size of the pattern needs to relate to the size and scale of the piece. We'll give you some handy rules of thumb. You also need to learn the balance between subtle enchancement or drowning in a sea of detail.

Most of the course will be focussed on teaching you the techniques for using the chisels and gouges to create the patterns. We also include the use of small portable power carving tools. We''ll touch on the use of other power tools like a router for creating texture.

We'll also cover the sharpening and maintenance of carving tools.

We'll cover which woods are appropriate for being carved. How does pine differ from oak or maple?

We'll touch on the use of paint and carving through laminated veneers to changes of colour and enhancing the perception of depth.

As a finale we'll cover how you can use handplanes to create texture on larger surfaces.

We will limit the range of textures and styles to those that can be created using a small range of tools. Between the school and Dan's collection for you not to need to bring  tools. However if you want to bring your own tools along feel free. See the list below.
